About the Author Endō Shūsaku (–) was Japan’s leading Christian writer, a prolific author of novels, stories, and plays. Among his translated works are The Samurai, Deep River, Wonderful Fool, and Foreign best-known novel, Silence, was adapted into a film by Martin Scorsese in Van C. Gessel is professor of Japanese at Brigham Young University. I want to mention that the other book I read by Endo is Wonderful Fool, which was indeed wonderful. It is not as violent (is that the right word) as Silence, but just as piercing and thought provoking.
